Trampolines have become a quintessential part of an Aussie backyard! Do you have one?

There are so many therapeutic benefits to trampolining.

1. Sensory benefits

Trampolining provides proprioceptive and vestibular input and can help children to regulate their bodies.

Proprioception is sometimes called "position sense" or "muscle sense" as information from receptors in our muscles and skin help to inform us of where are body parts are in space, how they relate to each other, how much and how quickly they are stretching, the speed and timing of movement as well as the mount of force exerted.  Proprioception helps us to be aware of our bodies and directs our motor control and planning.

The brain processes vestibular sensations received through the hair receptors in the inner ear and are stimulated by gravity.  Vestibular input can be described as linear (up/down, forward/backward and side to side) as well as rotational (spinning around).  These movements can be calming or stimulating.

Trampolines are a great way for children to explore m
ovement and their own bodies.  A well regulated body means that a child's mind will be ready to learn!

2. Motor benefits
A trampoline is a great way to work on balance, coordination, weight bearing, body awareness and bilateral coordination. Trampolining can also provide cardio-vascular and fitness benefits!

3. Social skills
A trampoline is fun on your own but even more fun with friends and family.  Children can practice turn taking and social skills; working out different ways to use the trampoline and be collaborative in play.

4. A boost of happiness!
A child's mental health and happiness is so important and can affect every aspect of their lives.  Trampolining enables children to feel weightlessness and bouncing can bring pure joy!

Why should kids use trampolines?

I took my little brother to 'bounce' (an indoor trampoline warehouse) a few weeks ago. There were so many children there bouncing on their trampolines showing off all kinds of skills and abilities. I can't count how many muscle groups in my body were working because my whole body was sore the next day! Not only did we get a great gross motor workout but we had a blast. It was so much fun bouncing and laughing. We felt our mood was lifted for the rest of the day. Trampolines are truly great for building core muscle strength and the fact that it does not involve a screen really helps kids social and emotional well being. I would love a Vuly Trampoline as we prescribe Vuly to our clients who attend our community health center. As a paediatric OT, I also love Your Kids OT. I have downloaded and found so many great resources! Thanks for all your work :)

We use trampolines in all the traditional ways of course - Jumping, ball games, flips, chasing in circles and so many more that the kids invent. However my absolute favourite thing to do on a trampoline with my kids is to climb in with all the pillows and cushions we can spare plus blankets when the sun is setting, we lie down in comfortable cosiness for a cuddle and simply look up and enjoy whatever is above. It could be looking for birds, clouds, planes, spotting the first star to appear, and seeing the beautiful sunset colours change. It’s so special to be outdoors listening to the kids chat and hearing nature sounds altogether. We are due to upgrade the trampoline to a Vuly because our old no-name one sadly isn’t any good for jumping anymore and my eldest with low muscle tone is putting on weight. What a great Christmas gift it would be! Thanks for your very interesting & helpful blog KidsOT - I’ve learned so much!

I remember spending countless amount of time on our backyard trampoline as a kid, although back then safety was not the forefront of our minds as young bodies and minds creating fun and endless memories! I can remember games like break the egg, double bounce, racing around the trampoline on the spring protector mats, summer days with the sprinkler, and hours profecting front/back saults and handsprings. Now as an OT and as a parent trampolines are an important part of both my practice and home life. Trampolines are a great way to develop the vestibular system, proprioception, coordination, self regulation and sensory regulation. Every child should have the opportunity to explore and use a trampoline, playing camp outs under the stars, cubby house under the trampoline and developing gross motor skills jumping for the stars!

For me it's all about the happiness boost. I love that they are developing motor skills at the same time, that's just a bonus, plus learning the skills of cooperation and having fun whilst learning the skills of movement.

We had to put our trampoline out of service earlier this year after a severe storm and it is greatly missed by the kids. I loved watching them jump while I got dinner ready, knowing they were learning so many skills.

I would love to watch them burning energy, and gaining trampolining skills again!

Wow, what a great prize. My daughter Emma is an only child and that often can be a challenge for her. There are only so many ways to play by yourself and often they aren't very physical. She often has a lot of energy but no one to burn it off with. Something like a trampoline is great as it's a physical activity that doesn't require others to participate, but at the same time is very social fun when friends come over.
Hopefully more friends will want to come round to play on the tramp!

I find the trampoline to be the great equaliser between the kids in my life. My son has non-verbal autism and finds it hard to take part in games with other kids, but stick em all on a trampoline and he has the time of his life!

Trampolines are such a great or so many reasons. I love how they can help in regulating emotions. Whenever there is a trampoline around and my kids are getting upset, sending them of for a bounce always helps them to work out there frustrations, might also be good for my bad moods too!

Aside from all the benefits that you’ve mentioned, a trampoline creates wonderful childhood memories that last a lifetime. I will never forget jumping on the trampoline as a child and enjoy the feeling my hair hitting my back as I bounced. It was also a great way to enjoy friendships with the neighbours in our street. I wish I could give similar memories to my children with a Vuly trampoline.

I honestly believe a trampoline is one of the best investments you can make in your children's childhood! Of course they are wonderful for sensory and motor skills - all that coordination, muscles working, active play! But they are also just fantastic for the fun and happiness and social connection. Just today my kids were playing 'poison shoes' on the trampoline, bouncing and laughing and bonding. And the crazy fun they have bouncing with their Dad is some of the sweetest memories they have. I am so glad trampolines have gotten so much safer with the netting so kids can really enjoy bouncing their hearts out! Vuly are such quality and innovative trampolines too. A trampoline is a key ingredient in a happy, active childhood :)

Amazing give away. I have been looking at vuly tramps because they look like the best on the market and I think kids need trampolines as a stress relief and emotional regulation outlet. I remember as a kid, when I was stressed, angry, sad, bored, I’d jump on the tramp and feel much better 🙂

Why should Kids jump on a Vuly trampoline?
because alas, I'm not a cash machine.
And luckily, there's no trampoline park nearby our home
We need a vuly trampoline here to get in the zone.
To jump, to giggle, to work that vestibular system
and burn off some of that sibling rivalry competition!

Kids should use trampolines to let out all that boundless energy that would otherwise be sending their caregivers to frazzletown. And for my autistic nephew, who I would give this to if I won, it is a welcome break from working so hard with all his therapies.

Jump. To the sky, hands stretching high.
Jump. Towards the sun, glint in my eye.
Jump. Up and down, weightless I fly.
Jump. Feel the joy, while the time flashes by.

A new trampoline would bring this family much joy
It would be a life saver, much more than a toy.
Since dad jumped straight though our much loved bounce maker,
We’ve needed a new one, of good quality, not a faker.
With kids who will fly, flip and bounce energy out,
Winning this Vuly would make this whole family shout!

A trampoline provides the ultimate sensory experience for a child. All the jumping, crashing, tumbling and stretching gives their Proprioceptive and Vestibular systems a great workout. Not to mention the added benefits of all that fresh air and sunshine! I also find it’s the one place my 3 kids (5,9 & 10) will happily play together for hours. Unfortunately, our tramp is broken and I can really tell the difference in my ADHD, SPD son who used the tramp not only to satisfy his sensory needs but also as a chill out zone. We would love to win a Vuly trampoline to help him restore balance everyday. Thanks for a great competition!

My sister and I loved our trampoline when we were growing up. I have so many great memories of our trampoline...
* getting out of the pool (shivering and blue) and jumping until we warmed up... then getting back in the pool!
* lying on the trampoline reading my book in peace
* creating a cubby under the trampoline, using a tarp as walls. This created a weird blue effect in the cubby, which was pretty cool. My sister and I would sit in the cubby "drinking tea" (water) from our tea set. I remember the day that we made ourselves sick consuming so much water!
* learning to do different bounces - on my knees, bottom, star jumps, and flips. It always felt so good to accomplish a new skill!

I have such positive memories of my own trampoline. I would love my kids to experience this too. Trampolines are a great way to exercise, to have fun with friends/siblings and to work off some excess energy. Jumping is a great study break and also a good way to work out some negative emotions (such as anger or stress!).

My daughter has mild CP and sensory issues. We have been using a trampoline for years to strengthen her muscles and give her some deep pressure feedback. It’s also amazing for her socially when we have friends over. Taking turns and trying new things. Trampolines are amazing and I love how the vuly system can add to that. The yoga swing looks amazing.

Why should kids use a trampoline? A trampoline is a secret "good for you" toy similar to the idea of adding hidden veggies into foods such as fruit smoothies, spag bol or meatballs. Kids think they are just playing / jumping up and down. In actuality, they are strengthening their muscles, coordination, improving their mind and regulating their emotions. They are breathing fresh air, enjoying the sunshine, laughing and making happy childhood memories instead of being stuck inside (sedentary) watching something on their devices or complaining they are bored.
In addition, you never have to convince / nag / yell at a child to use a trampoline. =)

I think it also subconsciously builds an important life lesson for children by linking happiness to jumping on the trampoline (no need to get into the science of natural endorphins - children just know they feel better). So when they grow into adults and the stress of the world starts to become overbearing, their desire for natural endorphins will hopefully lead them to an outdoor physical activity they enjoy.

Jumping free and flying high
I love to feel so close to the sky!
Feel the wind as it rushes around
I love to explore above the ground!
Laughing and giggling
Jumping and jiggling
Therapy you say?
Give me a tramp any day!
Balancing, falling, rolling around
Things I'm too scared to do on the ground
But let me jump and let me bounce
Watch as I'm a tiger, ready to pounce!
Hear me roar and hear me sing
On a tramp I can pretend to be anything!
So please let this be a present for me
I'd love to be like the other kids I see.

Trampolines are such great value for all the kids in the family (big kids too). My 14 year old son has been jumping for a decade! Great for gross motor, core strength, keeping active, and sibling bonding. We’ve had trampolines for years and will keep having them for many more.

All of us have a play story. There are chapters in all of our play stories that are exciting and full of adventure – and others that are made up of ordinary every day moments. The joy is not getting to the end of the book, but the experience of writing the chapters. It’s not one moment, but every moment. It’s the big ones, like tobogganing down sand dunes on your Dad’s lap and the gasp as your body hits the cold seawater. It’s the feeling in your tummy as you fly upside down on a rollercoaster. And it’s your body bumping from side to side getting soaked as you rush through a waterslide. But it’s also the little moments that fall in between the big moments. It’s laying on your trampoline, gazing at the stars on a chilly winter night or pointing out what shapes you can see in the clouds on a spring morning. It’s giggling while your big sister double-bounces you. It’s pegging playsilks and sheets from the rim of your trampoline and having a tea-party in your cubby. And it’s slipping and sliding on the soapy trampoline while the sprinkler cools you on a hot summer’s day. These everyday moments fuse together into one big experience, one big play story. And this is the play story we are celebrating today.

Trampolines are great for the health of kids (and adults!) :
to play, jump and have fun- a wonderful way to laugh and be silly, to socialize, be considerate and have exercise with both physical and mental health benefits. One of our kids has cystic fibrosis and trampolining is a form of physiotherapy.

When I think about my own childhood, jumping on a trampoline was always such a treasured and fun activity - one that didn't come often because not many of my friends had a trampoline and we definitely didn't! It was exhilarating to bounce as high as you could and really "let loose," the laughter was simply contagious. When I consider all the stress and physical restrictions on kids today... the academic pressure, the lure of media, the helicopter parenting phenomena that restricts them from all the fun activities we had as kids like climbing trees and exploring outdoors... having a safe, durable, and FUN activity such as bouncing on a Vuly trampoline could really help. Kids (and actually people of all ages!) should use trampolines for exercise, for stress relief, for physical challenges, for engagement with others, for sensory stimulation, for relaxation, and for making memories. I would simply love a trampoline to use with my three kids who are nearly ages 4, 7, and 10 - the perfect stage to introduce one! Thank you for this opportunity and for reminding me what an awesome investment a trampoline is!

Kids should use trampolines because they are often the first movement/sensory activities that a child (who can walk & climb) can use to demonstrate self-regulation... nothing is said, they just know in their body what is needed, what input they require... if you trust in the kids interoception... & stand back to observe... you will see how the moves they make are subtly different each time they get on their tramp. - standing, bending knees to bounce slightly, bouncing that becomes jumping, sitting, laying, rolling, leaning into the wall, walking or jumping in a circle... without input from us as adults kids complete their movement routine before moving on to the next activity... trampolines are reliable & trustworthy play companions - always accessible, with no set up required & so easy to grade movements independently for years as the kids age & their skills develop... for children with special needs & those who have experienced trauma trampolines provide rhythmic & repetitive input that their nervous system & brains find calming which can act as a circuit breaker in those moments when ‘big feelings’ are overwhelming... caregivers can connect with their dysregulated child whilst having some physical space & time to implement their own calming self-care rituals like deep breathing, applying hand cream or drinking a cuppa, confident that their kid is safe... being bounced by an older sibling is sometimes the first experience of spending time together without tears, while a parent quietly sheds a tear that the kids are playing... trampolines can become part of so many play ideas - cubby, ball pit, refuge from the sprinkler underneath, planetarium, pretend play -planet, rocket, iceberg... kids come back to trampolines over & over again even if the backyard is full of other options or the mat is wet... trampolines are memory makers for movement seekers...

Kids should use trampolines because

When they're being chased by robots from the planet Zircon, and their power thrusters fail, they need that extra boost from the anti-gravitamatron swamp they happen to come across on Zircon

And

When they're laying up for the winning shot at the NBA championships, and the 7 foot defender is making a rude face at them, some extra lift is always helpful in jumping right. over. their. heads

And

Sometimes they just need to get away from their little brother bear, so they climb up into a cave and find an interesting circular hammock, and just sinking into that bouncy hammock seems to make little brother bear roars a bit softer and further away

And

Sometimes friends come over which obviously means they need a pirate ship to sail these rough seas, and there are way too many sharks snapping beneath them, and a trampoline is very good for avoiding sharks

And

When grown ups are being extra annoying, it's always fun to trap them in a trampoline and then run around and around them, laughing while they try to find the opening to get out, and somehow grown ups become much less annoying after this

And

Sometimes it's just nice to talk to people through a trampoline because it makes their voice sound funny and a funny voice can make talking a bit easier

And

Sometimes when talking is too hard, it helps just to fly a little, and to land a lot, and the landing never hurts on a trampoline, and the beat of the landing is like a giant's heartbeat, and the heartbeat goes through their bodies and bones and makes things not as bad

And

One day, they will remember their adventures to Zircon, and sailing the seven seas with their pirate crew, and feeling a giant's heartbeat, and talking and laughing and stumbling and bouncing back, and they will be really glad that once upon a time, they had a trampoline.
