Technology for OT
Technology for occupational therapy went into over-drive in 2020. The world went online for everything from school, work, play, meetings and telehealth (or teletherapy). Lockdowns and restrictions around the world kept everyone at home and limited with supplies. Whilst restrictions at home were limiting in some respects, the whole online world opened up with new opportunities for learning and playing.
Online therapy services have seen the introduction of green screen sessions, boom cards, online bitmoji classrooms and google form escape rooms to name a few.
The YKOT You-tube channel was established in 2020 to provide an avenue for sharing therapeutic ideas ---> go to YKOT You-tube Channel.
My personal philosophy continues to be ... that many therapeutic outcomes are best achieved through hands-on-learning and using manipulatives (ie. real items). Movement and learning are best achieved away from the screen. Incidental learning is best achieved through every day activities.
Having said that, most children are highly motivated when provided with the opportunity to use technology. It often provides instant rewards seeing a character gain points, beating an opponent or creating something. As an OT and a mum, I am interested in providing my children with age appropriate apps that promote learning, reading and motor skills. Fun is vital too!
Using technology for occupational therapy can be motivating, rewarding and achieve outcomes unable to be gained via traditional means. I am not endorsing the use of an app for a whole therapy session when a child is being seen via face to face services. I am not endorsing that technology MUST be used.
Reviews and endorsements of apps, websites or new online learning will be made based on my expertise and personal opinion; and deemed worthy of such endorsement. The opinions shared in sponsored content or affiliate links will always be my own and not that of the advertising company or brand. Content, advertising space or posts will be clearly identified if paid or sponsored.

Telehealth is the use of information and communication technologies (ICT) to deliver health-related services when the provider and client are in different physical locations. Telehealth may be used for evaluation, intervention, monitoring, supervision, and consultation (between remote therapist, client, and/or local health-care provider) as permitted by jurisdictional, institutional, and professional regulations and policies governing the practice of occupational therapy.Telehealth is an appropriate delivery model for occupational therapy services when in-person services are not possible, practical, or optimal for delivering care and/or when service delivery via telehealth is mutually acceptable to the client and provider. (World Federation of Occupational Therapists, 2014 Telehealth Position Statement). |
