Activities of daily  refer to the skills a child needs to look after themselves independently.  This can include dressing, grooming, tooth brushing, eating, toiletting and bathing. Often described as "self-help skills"; children are expected to learn these skills so that they are "independent" or can "help themselves" before they reach adult hood.

As a child grows into adulthood, self-help skills may also include making their own meals, accessing public transport, shopping and managing a budget.

Occupational Therapists can help children to -
  • develop skills needed to perform these activities of daily living
  • adapt the activity so that the child can perform as much as they are able to
  • modify the activity or technique for doing the activity
  • use adaptive equipment to assist with achieving these activities
  • make environmental modifications
