Summer Frozen Fun!

We love summer holidays!  The beautiful warm days drawing us all outdoors with the beach and pool calling.  We can't always go to the beach and pool so here is an alternative to water play in the backyard.

What do you need?
  • small figurines
  • small containers
         (we used jelly moulds)
  • water
  • a freezer!

What do you need to do?

Not much...place the figurines into the containers and fill with water.  Place the containers in the freezer until set.

Ready!

How to play?
Unmould the containers and watch your kids figure out how to "rescue" the figurines.

We used oven trays, chopsticks (as chisels) and toy hammers.  You could try adding salt too!

Mr 4 and Miss 8 enjoyed playing with the ice. Our containers were small so they did not have to do much to melt the ice in the hot sun.  The kids discovered that it was easier to smash the ice with hammers after they had started to melt.

I could talk about the benefits of ice play... a science experiment, language, imaginary play {rescuing the figurines} and sensory exploration. In this case though, this ice play is pure summer fun in action!

Ice fun is great for all ages. Toddlers could play with ice cubes without the figurines.  Older kids will love freezing huge blocks of ice and experiment with different ways to crack and melt the ice.  You could add some big bowls or buckets of water to the play for extra fun.

Do your kids love playing with ice?

Such a great idea! I can't believe I forgot about this activities between last summer & now. We're in the middle of a few cool days but once it warms up again we'll definitely be putting our jelly moulds to good use ;-)

Another hot one today, we found the jelly moulds a good size for young kids.

What a fun idea! Thanks for sharing. My kids love to make ice blocks with flowers and leaves in them but they are not very useful - this would be much more fun.
