Autistic Language Cheatsheet

As an occupational therapist, learning the language autistic people use to describe their experiences has been a key part of moving toward neurodiversity-affirming practice. When I understand concepts like burnout, masking, or double empathy, I’m less focused on fixing behaviour and more focused on what a nervous system is communicating. That shift changes everything. It helps me to get curious and ask, “What support would make this feel safer or easier right now?”

In this cheat sheet, you will find the following definitions:

  • Neurodiversity affirming practice
  • Autistic/Autistic Person
  • Neurodivergent
  • Neurotypical
  • Neurodiversity Paradigm
  • Autistic Joy
  • Autistic Burnout
  • Spoon Theory
  • Atypical Burnout
  • Monotropism
  • Executive Function
  • Monotropic Split
  • Monotropic Spiral
  • Double Empathy Problem
  • Gestalt Language Processing
  • Echolalia
  • Selective/Situational Mutism
  • Meltdown
  • Shutdown
  • Allostatic Load
  • Meerkat Mode (Hypervigilance)
  • Stimming
  • Masking
  • PDA (Pathological Demand Avoidance/Pervasive Drive for Autonomy)

This cheatsheet is suitable to share with parents, educators and other health professionals to assist with education about Autistic Language.
